Etymotic Music PRO: Electronic Earplugs Save Your Hearing

It’s easier to party like a rock star when you’re young, and it’s easier to be in the audience attending the shows as well. But by the time you’re 30, you’re probably OK with skipping the most pit and worrying more about the effects of excessive bass on your eardrums. Whether your choice of music is hip-hop or rock- or even if you prefer monster truck rallies over concerts- your ears could probably use a little bit of protection from the world at large.

If you’re working around jet airplanes, you’ve probably got a pair of those huge over-ear sets that protect you from the noise. Everyone else, including those who play in a band, probably wants to hear naturally rather than seal themselves off completely, and it’s nice if you can avoid having to remove earplugs all the time. That’s why the Etymotic Music PRO Electronic Earplugs were created, an earplug-earphone hybrid, to help prevent hearing loss. At normal levels, you won’t notice much of a difference, but when the volume picks up then they gradually provide your choice of a 9- or 15-dB sound reduction. Even in the case of instantaneous sounds- like cymbal clashes- you’ll be covered. Tiny microphones are always listening, waiting to assist.

There are some custom-fit options out there that might be more comfortable if you’re planning on wearing these for hours at a time, and you will need to consider battery life- these last about seven to ten days of all-day use until you’ll need to change them out and replace them (not recharge them). Plus, they do compress sound a little bit- much of the spectrum was just a bit modified from natural. But we were impressed at the nice variety of tips included, from triple-flanges to foam, which means they should fit just about everyone and most situations. The intended audience includes music educators and security personnel, and Etymotic gear is always durable- we’ve loved most of their stuff in the past.

The Music PROs are an unusual product, almost magic-seeming in the right circumstances, able to help reduce the extreme levels of volume in your surroundings. They’re lightweight, portable, and stay snug in your ears even when you’re moving. For anyone who is worried about the long-term effects of a noisy environment at work- or at play- the Etymotic Music PROs can help. Available online and in stores for around $300, they come with plenty of accessories in a complete package: a protective case, cleaning tool, and neck cord as well.
