Clear Tune Monitors VS-3: Great Vintage Look (And Triple Drivers)
Musicians and audiophiles can be some of the most difficult people to buy gifts for- especially when it should be so easy. After all, you definitely don’t want to grab them an instrument, and they probably are very picky about music- and most of the other gear, from amps to stands to drumsticks- are either too cheap or too expensive, or too big and awkward. But just about anyone can appreciate a good set of headphones, and musicians more than most folks- but the trick is to find some that they don’t already have, and will satisfy.
The Clear Tune Monitors VS-3 should do the trick. The name comes from the Vintage Series lineup, and though you might not be immediately familiar with this Florida company, they offer a wide variety of models- from introductory single driver styles to the top-of-the-line six driver CT-6E. This pair features a trio of balanced armature drivers working with a three-way crossover, which ensures you’re well covered across the frequency spectrum. And we loved the cables, even if they wee just a bit too short- braided for security, they were still light, and could slide nicely over the top of your ears.
We also appreciated the packaging- a little kitschy but cute, and the sort of thing you keep around. Inside, you’ll find a carrying case, six pairs of eartips (both flanges and non, silicone and foam), a cleaning tool, and even a 1/4-inch stereo adapter plug. The body of each housing features a nice chrome plating, but most of it is actually plastic, which helps keep the weight down. It also allows them to come in several colors- pink, red, blue, and the classic black. The fit didn’t work for everyone- some folks like a little less bulk, or felt like it was a little tight.
But the most important thing, of course, is the sound- and here the VS3 satisfies. There’s tons of detail, lush on electronic sounds, never cold or aggressive, with some real depth. Bass isn’t overwhelming- these aren’t a hip-hop lovers dream- but they certainly can put out plenty of oomph and a lot of volume. They shine on stage though, or so we can imagine- the sort of live monitors that allow ideal transparency. Balanced, with a good sound stage, the only real downside is the price- these are certainly in line with most other triple-driver options out there but are definitely a very special sort of gift. Expect to spend around $499 for the Clear Tune VS-3, available online and in stores now.
