Mustaches and Corsets: Edwardian Ball 2011
Top hats, feathers, corsets, and waxed mustaches adorned the line of people along Van Ness waiting to get into the Regency Ballroom for the Edwardian Ball. Amongst the throngs of ladies and gentlemen, we waited our turn, tottered up the stairs, and entered a uniquely San Francisco affair, an alternate world hovering between the past and the never-was.
As you can see from the pictures above, and the others on our Facebook album, outfits varied from authentic period garb to deconstructed typewriters for upper body wear and bouquet dresses. It was a night to see and be seen, with much of the fun coming from admiring the other attendees. There was plenty of live music, and circus acts, as well as a cute tea area, several bars, and a bazaar. We loved the building itself, with the balcony and adornments, and the Gorey art spread throughout. We ran into several people we knew from various other areas of life, and admired their finery. Downstairs at the bazaar we resisted several tempting (corsets, hats, lacy cuff inlays...) items, but did succumb to the charms of a flower and feathers hair clip and a gift for someone who may read this.
For those who have yet to experience the magic of the event, the next edition will be held in Los Angeles on March 5th. We're eagerly awaiting next year's ball in San Francisco, polishing our clockwork and brainstorming our ensembles.
